UPI, Cash & Cards: Paying Your Way Through India in 2026

Phone wallets, tipping culture, forex, and why small notes still save the day outside metros.

Unified Payments Interface lets Indians pay via QR codes instantly from bank accounts. Vendors display printed QR stickers; you scan, enter amount, confirm—no card machine required. Travelers can sometimes register if they have local bank partnerships or specific apps—rules evolve, so verify current RBI guidance before your trip.

For short trips, carry backup cash because rural stalls may lack connectivity or owners may prefer notes. Peak hours occasionally stall UPI when networks congest; retry or switch to cash calmly.

Visa and Mastercard work in cities at hotels, malls, and many restaurants; AmEx acceptance is patchier. Notify home banks about travel dates to avoid fraud blocks that strand you at checkout. At POS terminals, you may be offered dynamic currency conversion—decline if the exchange rate looks poor; pay in rupees and let your bank convert.

Contactless limits vary; chip-and-PIN is standard. Carry a second card stored separately from your wallet.
