Rule explained
In real life, Germans often prefer **polite alternatives** instead of a direct imperative. **Informal polite question:** - *Kannst du mir helfen?* (Can you help me?) - *Kannst du bitte die Tür zumachen?* **Formal polite question:** - *Könnten Sie mir helfen?* (more polite than *Können Sie …?*) - *Würden Sie bitte kurz warten?* **Signs / written instructions:** - *Bitte nicht rauchen.* - *Bitte Türen schließen.* This uses the **infinitive**, not an imperative form.
Examples
Use these mini-pairs as templates:
- Kannst du bitte kurz warten? — Can you please wait a moment? (du)
- Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen? — Could you please help me? (Sie)
- Bitte nicht rauchen. — No smoking, please. (sign)
- Bitte Türen schließen. — Please close doors. (sign)
Common mistakes
Watch out for these learner errors:
- Using a direct imperative in very formal situations when a question form would be better.
