Full hours: „Es ist drei Uhr.“ Half past: „halb vier“ = half to four = 3:30 (German counts forward to the next hour). Quarter: „Viertel nach drei“ / „Viertel vor vier“.

Examples

Use these mini-pairs as templates:

• Es ist zehn Uhr. — It is ten o'clock.
• Es ist halb sieben. — It is half past six (6:30).
• Ich komme um acht Uhr. — I'm coming at eight o'clock.

Common mistakes

Watch out for these learner errors:

• „halb sechs“ is 5:30, not 6:30 — think “halfway to six”.
• Use „Wie spät ist es?“ to ask the time; „Wann?“ for “when” in a broader sense.
