Advanced cohesion uses connectors like folglich (consequently), insofern (insofar as), demzufolge, mithin, gleichwohl. They bind academic argumentation.
Examples
Use these mini-pairs as templates:
- Die Daten sind unvollständig; folglich ist die Schlussfolgerung vorläufig. — The data are incomplete; consequently the conclusion is provisional.
- Insofern hat er Recht. — He is right in that respect.
- Gleichwohl bleibt das Problem ungelöst. — Yet the problem remains unsolved.
Common mistakes
Watch out for these learner errors:
- These are adverbs → verb in position 2 after them.
- Reserve for formal / academic register — they sound stilted in casual speech.
