Form the comparative with -er and the superlative with am ___-sten. Many short adjectives also take an umlaut.
Examples
Use these mini-pairs as templates:
- Mein Bruder ist größer als ich. — My brother is taller than me.
- Das ist das beste Buch. — That is the best book.
- Heute ist es kälter. — Today it is colder.
- Sie läuft am schnellsten. — She runs the fastest.
- Dieses Auto ist teurer. — This car is more expensive.
Common mistakes
Watch out for these learner errors:
- Use 'als' (not 'wie' or 'dass') after a comparative: 'größer als ich'.
- 'gut → besser → am besten' is irregular.
