Rule explained
B2 connectors add **stance and logic**: *obwohl* (concessive, verb-final), *trotzdem / dennoch* (**adverbs**, main clause **V2**), *hingegen / dagegen* (**contrast**), *allerdings* (**limitation**). **Doch** at the start of a clause can signal contradiction sharper than *aber*. **Classification trick**: if you can move the connector alone before the finite verb as an entire phrase, it is often a **subordinator** (*Obwohl …, so*); if the next clause has **immediate V2**, it is likely a **conjunctive adverb** (*…; trotzdem + Verb*).
Examples
Use these mini-pairs as templates:
- Obwohl es regnet, gehen wir. — Although it's raining we go.
- Es regnet. Trotzdem gehen wir. — It's raining. Nevertheless we go.
- Er ist müde, dennoch arbeitet er. — He's tired, yet he works.
Common mistakes
Watch out for these learner errors:
- 'obwohl' ≠ 'trotzdem' grammatically — verb position differs.
- Adverbs in position 1 still push the verb to position 2.
