**nie** = **never** (frequency / habit in time). It usually sits **late** in the clause: *Ich gehe nie ins Theater.* · *Das passiert nie.* **noch nie** = *never … before*: *Ich war noch nie in Japan.* **niemals** is a stronger or more formal synonym; at A2, *nie* is enough in speech. **nicht immer** = *not always* — different from *nie*: *Er ist nicht immer pünktlich* (sometimes late) vs *Er ist nie pünktlich* (always late).
