To introduce yourself you combine a **name pattern** with optional **origin** (*kommen aus*) and **home** (*wohnen in*). **Ich heiße …** uses the verb *heißen* (“to be called”). **Mein Name ist …** is a noun phrase with *sein* implied in the English “is”. Origin uses **aus** + place: *Ich komme aus Deutschland.* Where you live now uses **in** + place: *Ich wohne in Köln.* If the country needs an article (*in der Schweiz*, *in den USA*), learn the phrase as a chunk at A1.

Common mistakes

Watch out for these learner errors:

• Don't say *Ich komme in Deutschland* — origin is *aus*, not *in*.
• *wohnen aus* is wrong; *wohnen* takes *in* for the place.
