For most of these verbs, *ich* uses the **infinitive stem**: *ich sehe*, *ich gebe*, *ich fahre*, *ich esse*. *wir* and *sie* (plural) use the same stem as the infinitive: *wir geben*, *wir fahren*, *sie nehmen*. *ihr* usually keeps that stem too: *ihr seht*, *ihr gebt*, *ihr fahrt*, *ihr esst*, *ihr sprecht* — compare *du sprichst* / *er spricht* with *ihr sprecht* (no *i* in the stem for *ihr*). Always pick the form that matches the **subject pronoun** in front of the verb.

• Ich fahre gern Fahrrad, aber er fährt mit dem Auto. — I like to ride a bike, but he goes by car.
• Wir sehen den Film. Ihr seht die Nachrichten. — We're watching the film. You (pl.) are watching the news.
• Sie essen zu viel Zucker, und du isst kein Obst. — They eat too much sugar, and you don't eat any fruit.

Common mistakes

Watch out for these learner errors:

• Do not use *fährst* for *wir*: *wir fahren*.
• *Ihr fahrt* (no umlaut) — the *a* is back for *ihr*.
